Disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein has reportedly been diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia while serving his prison sentence in New York.

According to sources cited by NBC News, Weinstein, who was once one of the most influential figures in the entertainment industry, is currently undergoing treatment for cancer in prison.

The diagnosis is a further health complication for the former movie producer, who is already managing other medical issues. Earlier this year, Weinstein underwent emergency heart surgery.

Weinstein’s spokesperson, Juda Engelmayer, told Variety: “It is both troubling and unacceptable that such private and confidential health matters have become a subject of public discourse.”

The news of Weinstein’s cancer diagnosis follows his indictment last month on a new sex crime charge. Weinstein pleaded not guilty to a criminal sex act stemming from an alleged assault on a woman in a Manhattan hotel in 2006.

Weinstein is currently serving a 16-year sentence for rape charges in California, and in 2020, he was convicted in New York for similar crimes, though that verdict was later overturned in April. A retrial is pending.

Allegations against Weinstein were central to the rise of the MeToo movement, with more than 80 women accusing him of sexual misconduct.
