Comic, pundit, and podcast host Bill Maher was shocked when he told Shazam! star Zachary Levi he was “canceled” for supporting President-elect Donald Trump — and was promptly informed by Levi that this never happened.
Levi— star of the Shazam! films and a lengthy stint as the titular character of former NBC hit Chuck — was the guest on this week’s edition of Maher’s Club Random Podcast, during which the subject of his vocal support for Trump came up.
Maher — who has made decrying “cancel culture” a major facet of his thing — matter-of-factly declared Levi was punished for supporting Trump. Levi laughed and told him no, actually:
BILL MAHER: You got canceled for for basically saying.ZACHARY LEVI: Have I been canceled? (LAUGHS)BILL MAHER: Well–ZACHARY LEVI: I hope I haven’t been canceled yet. I mean, if it happens, it happens.BILL MAHER: I mean, yes. Come on. Didn’t you lose jobs for that? Isn’t that what canceling is?ZACHARY LEVI: No. For coming out and voting for Trump?BILL MAHER: Yeah.ZACHARY LEVI: I mean, listen, I have yet to see what the ultimate effects of all that are going to be. I already had multiple jobs that I was in the process of shooting or that I have yet to shoot, and none of those have been compromised.All of those, like none of my producers or any of the these studios behind
those films or projects have called and said, “Hey, listen, this is a, you know, a line too far and we can’t have you associated with the project anymore.”.We’re all still full steam ahead on those. How it ultimately plays out in the future, I don’t know. You know, I’m going to sit down with my team. I have yeah, I’ve been in Eastern Europe making this movie all during the election and everything. I mean, I was all, you know, kind of disconnected a lot from what was going on other than social media and following the news and kind of seeing the play by plays.But, you know, I’m going to sit down with my team and we’ll talk about it because I haven’t talked to any of them. They might say, hey, listen, we’ve had some phone calls with some people and they don’t want to work with you anymore. I don’t know.BILL MAHER: I could have sworn that already happened.ZACHARY LEVI: No.
