WATCH: Damascus Begins to Fall as Syrian Rebels Force Collapse of Assad Regime
Reports indicate that rebel forces have appeared to enter the Syrian capital of Damascus as President Bashar al-Assad’s military collapses across the country.
According to a report by CNN, rebel forces have entered the Barzeh, a neighborhood inside the capital city, noting that clashes between government and rebel forces were currently taking place.
Earlier this week, Assad’s regime was overthrown in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo. Over the last few days, rebel and Kurdish forces made significant military advances, including capturing the city of Homs.
“I saw rebel fighters moving through the inner alleys of Barzeh toward Police Club Street, and I can hear very loud sounds of clashes. The electricity is cut off, and the internet is very weak, people are staying at their houses,” an anonymous resident inside the city told CNN.

Meanwhile, another source familiar with the rebels’ advance told the network that “Militarily, Damascus has fallen.” In addition, the source noted that reconnaissance units entered the city overnight, searching for Assad’s locations, but were unsuccessful.
The rebel operatives have reportedly taken key strategic positions throughout the city and are communicating with senior regime officials who are considering switching sides.
Over the last 24 hours, rebel forces have conquered positions north, south, and east around Damascus. CNN reports rebels entered suburbs just 1 mile from the city center.
