Bernie Sanders Vows to Push Trump On Following Through With ‘Good’ Promises Like Cap On Credit Card Interest: ‘Let’s See How Far It Goes’
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) told Jon Stewart he plans on holding President-elect Donald Trump to the “good things” he’s pushed for, including a 10% cap on credit card interest rates.
Sanders joined Stewart on the latest The Weekly Show podcast and during a discussion about how MAGA critics can work with the incoming administration, Sanders said he plans on seeing how far Trump is willing to go on some proposals by introducing legislation himself.
Sanders called Trump a president interested in serving billionaires, but he noted there are points of agreement between the two and he’d like to work on those. He also sees points of agreement with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Elon Musk too, specifically on targeting processed foods and cutting military spending.
Stewart asked if the idea that Republicans carrying “the mantle” of populism for workers is a “facade” or whether there are things Republicans are proposing the Senator would like.
“Well, there will be some things that Trump said, some things that Elon Musk said, some things that Robert Kennedy said that make sense,” Sanders replied. “But overall, I think it’s very clear. You know, Trump is appointing his billionaire friends to the important positions in the cabinet. And his job is to represent the billionaire class — with some exceptions.”
Sanders elaborated, and said eh would introduce legislation that carried through on some of Trump’s campaign promises to see how far they actually go:
Well, there will be some things that Trump said, some things that Elon Musk said, some things that Robert Kennedy said that make sense. But overall, I think it’s very clear – You know, Trump is appointing his billionaire friends to the important positions in the cabinet. And his job is to represent the billionaire class, with some exceptions.
He’s going to have to walk a bit of a tightrope because he’s made promises to working class people. And I think what our job what my job and people in Congress who share my views not to many is to say, okay, Mr. Trump, you talked about a 10% cap on interest rates for credit cards. That’s a great idea.
Well, you know what, John? I’m going to introduce that legislation. Let’s see how far it goes.
For years now, I have understood, as most Americans have, that the defense budget is bloated, that many of the major defense contractors engage in fraud and waste, massive cost overruns.
All right. I have legislation in to cut military spending by 10%. Recently, you may have noticed that Elon Musk came out and said, you know what, we should be cutting military spending. How many Republicans will go to war? So when they say good things and appropriate things, I think we should work with them.

At a recent rally in New York, Trump unveiled a new economic policy that would drastically change the credit industry, though he said his cap on interest would be “temporary.”
“While working Americans catch up, we’re going to put a temporary cap on credit card interest rates,” Trump said. “We can’t let them make 25% and 30%.”
