William Shatner Tells Bill Maher What Scares Him Most About Trump Win: ‘It’s Not’ Going To ‘Get Better’
Legendary Star Trek actor and author William Shatner told host and comic Bill Maher what scares him most about President-elect Donald Trump’s victory — and it ain’t Tribbles.
Shatner was a guest on this week’s edition of Maher’s Club Random Podcast, during which the pair spent a good chunk of time discussing Trump’s surprisingly decisive victory in the presidential election.
When the one-time Captain Kirk told Maher he was most concerned about climate change, Maher revealed that issue came first to mind as he prepped his HBO show the week of the election:
WILLIAM SHATNER: The thing that worries me the most is global warming. You can, you know, the wrong financial advice or then get rid of whatever government agencies you want to get rid of.
You can always put them back in four years later.
But you can’t lose four years of global warming. I mean, we’re seeing these storms hit now. And once in a thousand years, storms are now hitting every other year, every year. And it’s not like you can say, well, you know, it’s going to get better. It’s not.
BILL MAHER: It’s very funny that you mention that because, you know, the hardest thing to write on the week of an election because I have to start it on Monday for the show on Friday, and the election is Tuesday. I can’t write Monday night who won the election.
And so I said this week what I want to do and what I’m going to do Friday night is a piece about global warming, about the oceans.
Because the only time the floating garbage patch in the middle of the ocean was raised–.
WILLIAM SHATNER: I know it well.
–was by the Insult comic. When he made the joke about it and said it was like Puerto Rico and everybody flipped out about that. And my thing is, yeah, ha ha. But it’s really a sad commentary that neither party mentions this giant problem.
WILLIAM SHATNER: Size of Texas out there.
BILL MAHER: It was, it’s got bigger. Now it’s the size of Alaska.
WILLIAM SHATNER: So has Texas.
BILL MAHER: Yeah. And I never.
WILLIAM SHATNER: All those people moving there.
BILL MAHER: Everyone in it? Yeah. But you. But you love all the states. You’re beloved everywhere. Right. I mean, you know, you’re beyond politics.
WILLIAM SHATNER: Am I?
BILL MAHER: Don’t you think?
WILLIAM SHATNER: Well, I hope so.
