UFC Star Colby Covington Blames Brutal Loss on Him Being Too Busy Campaigning for Trump: ‘Wasn’t a Full Training Camp’
Pro-Trump UFC star Colby Covington attributed Saturday’s loss to him not having enough time to train while he was campaigning for the president-elect.
Covington took on Joaquin Buckley in a welterweight bout in Tampa, Florida. In the first round, Covington sustained a cut above his eye that he believed came from a head butt. As a result of the cut, his vision was severely limited as he bled profusely.
At the end of the third round, the fight was halted to allow a doctor to come in and examine the cut. The doctor could be heard on the broadcast saying, “He’s gonna lose this eyelid,” prompting the official to wave off the fight and give Buckley the win by TKO.
Speaking after the fight on his YouTube channel, Covington explained why he wasn’t able to have a full training camp heading into Saturday night.
“It’s one fight, you know?” Covington said. “And I’m more than just a fighter, you know? I’m gonna let this fuel me. I’m gonna get a full training camp. [I] came on short notice. This is for the company. This is for the fans. This wasn’t a full training camp; and I was campaigning for Trump, you know, getting him ready. I wasn’t even in the training room. I came off the couch on two-and-a-half weeks notice… It’s a tough ending to go like that. I feel like I was just getting my wind and I was going to come out strong, but, you know, it is what it is.”
