‘Hope I’m Never Around Anybody That Does That Again’: 49ers Players Slam Teammate Who Suddenly Walked Off the Field in the 3rd Quarter
San Francisco 49ers players were outraged upon learning that one of their teammates walked off the field during Thursday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams.
In the third quarter of the game, linebacker De’Vondre Campbell was seen walking into the locker room with someone from the team staff. Following the game — which the 49ers lost 12-6 — coach Kyle Shanahan revealed to the media that Campbell simply didn’t want to play anymore.
“Yeah, he said he didn’t wanna play today,” Shanahan said in the press conference. “He did when I asked him why he didn’t wanna go in… It was in the third quarter.”
In the locker room, players expressed disappointment that one of their own would simply quit on the team. Cornerback Charvarius “Mooney” Ward called it “sucker shit.”
“I mean, he’s a professional. He’s been playing for a long time,” Ward said. “I mean, if he didn’t wanna play, he shouldn’t have dressed out. You know, they could’ve told him that before the game; so I feel like that was some sucker shit that he did. Definitely hurt the team because you know [Dre Greenlaw] went down and we needed a linebacker.
Star tight end George Kittle called the decision “selfish” and said “it wasn’t for this team.”
“I’ve never been around anybody that’s ever done that,” Kittle added, “and I hope I’m never around anybody that does that again.”
