‘Fire in the Hole’: New Orleans TV Reports Explosions Heard in French Quarter as FBI Agents Sweep for Bombs After Terror Attack

 

A New Orleans TV station reported two explosions were heard on Wednesday morning in the city’s French Quarter hours after a man rammed through a crowd of people during a New Year’s Day celebration that left 10 people dead and 35 others injured.

WDSU-TV – the city’s NBC News affiliate – reported FBI agents were sweeping the area of the attack for explosives and that two small explosions were heard.

A reporter with the network said he heard both small blasts but it was unclear if they were related to a terror attack police said was carried out by 42-year-old Shamsud Din Jabbar of Texas. On two separate occasions Wednesday mroning, an FBI agent was heard stating, “Fire in the hole” before the explosions were heard. WDSU’s Erin Lowrey reported:

Agents responded to what is believed to be “suspicious devices” found in the area, followed by agents screaming “fire in the hole.”

Two small explosions were heard at the intersection of Dauphine and Orleans after FBI agents responded to possible explosive devices in the area.

It is unclear at this time what the devices were and if they were connected to the attack.

Just after 3:15 a.m. CT, police say Jabbar rammed into a crowd of people who were ringing in the new year dressed in military gear.

The suspect was said to have been armed with a rifle whihc he used to open fire. He was also reportedly in possession of an ISIS flag. Police killed Jabbar quickly.

Dozens of people were evacuated from the St. Roch area after a fire broke out an Airbnb that investigators believe is connected to a deadly New Year’s Day attack on Bourbon Street.

Law enforcement officials and bomb squad detectives were called to 1329 Mandeville Street after firefighters doused flames that broke out at the rental, according to sources close to the investigation. Investigators believe the Airbnb was rented by the suspect in the Bourbon Street attack, sources said.
