Joe Rogan sounded the alarm on virus samples getting leaked from an Australian lab, fearing a second Covid pandemic or an apocalyptic scenario similar to the film 28 Days Later.

Rogan shocked his guest Julian Lennon, son of the late John Lennon, this week on The Joe Rogan Experience when he read from news reports about what Australian authorities called a “serious breach of biosecurity protocols.” Australia’s public health department has launched an investigation into the leak. More than 300 vials went missing from Queensland’s Public Health Virology Laboratory, and those viruses include infectious diseases like Hendra virus, Lyssavirus and Hantavirus.

Authorities have said they do not know if the vials were destroyed or are still out there, but they insisted there is currently “no evidence of risk to the community.”

After bringing up the Covid pandemic, Rogan informed Lennon on his podcast about the Australian lab leak, referring to scientists experimenting with deadly diseases “goofballs” and comparing the situation to the opening of 28 Days Later. In the 2002 horror movie, a deadly “rage” virus is unleashed in England after animal rights activists release monkeys being experimented on in a lab.

“We got into this mess in the first place because — and this is now been confirmed — that they were working on these viruses in this laboratory and it got released and that these viruses had been created through gain of function research. So these goofballs are down there working on viruses, making them more infectious to humans. And you would say, well, why are they doing that? Well, surely they’re doing that so they can study them and they can cure them, they can make sure that we don’t get sick,” Rogan said.

“Is that the logic?” his guest asked.

“That’s the logic, but they didn’t have a cure for it,” Rogan replied.

“This virus is rabies,” Rogan’s producer added.

“Oh, great!” Rogan said.

Lyssavirus is a group of viruses that can cause rabies, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Yeah, they were a good thing to just have laying around. I mean, that’s like the opening of 28 Days Later,” Rogan said.

Check out the full Rogan/Lennon exchange below:

JULIN LENNON: We have no idea what half these people are up to.

JOE ROGAN: No, we don’t.

LENNON: Covid being an example.

ROGAN: Yeah, a perfect example. Do you see what happened in Australia yesterday? There was a laboratory that lost track of it. I put it on Twitter, lost track of like a bunch of different, like really serious diseases.

LENNON: How did that happen?

ROGAN: Someone left the door open. Yeah, I went once. Me and my friend Duncan, we went once to the the lab in Galveston, Texas, the Center for Disease Control. I believe the organization has this enormous bio lab down in Galveston where they take care of like, some of the most dangerous and deadly viruses in the world. So they have like this incredible filtration system and everybody’s wearing spacesuits and they’re walking around and we’re in there going, what are you guys doing? [Reading report] Hundreds of vials of deadly viruses have gone missing from a laboratory and scientists warn they could be weaponized. So what are — 100 vials of Hendra virus, Two vials of Hantavirus, 223 vials of Lyssavirus, a virus, all of which are extremely deadly for humans.

LENNON: And of course, I love it when the media says, you know, something along the lines at the end of that statement it that could be weaponized. That’s great. Now, freaks are going to go and try and find that stuff.

ROGAN: We got into this mess in the first place because — and this is now been confirmed — that they were working on these viruses in this laboratory and it got released and that these viruses had been created through gain of function research. So these goofballs are down there working on viruses, making them more infectious to humans. And you would say, well, why are they doing that? Well, surely they’re doing that so they can study them and they can cure them, they can make sure that we don’t get sick.

LENNON: Is that the logic?

ROGAN: That’s the logic, but they didn’t have a cure for it.

JAMIE VERNON: This virus is rabies.

ROGAN: Oh, great. List of viruses responsible for rabies, which is arguably the deadliest — virus known, disease known, the prototype rabies, Lyssavirus, a virus thought to be able to infect all terrestrial mammals. Yaaaaaaay. They were a good thing to just have laying around. I mean, that’s like the opening of 28 Days Later, right?

LENNON: Yeah.
