Jon Stewart Blasts Media For Scaring People About Trump: ‘Don’t Know How Helpful It Is To Get Us Sh*tting Our Pants This Much’
Jon Stewart knocked the media for painting a depressing, Looney Tunes-esque scenario for the United States before President-elect Donald Trump even takes office.
Stewart was joined by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) on the latest episode of his podcast The Weekly Show, released Thursday, and Stewart took aim at the media at the top of the episode, arguing he’s unsure how “helpful it is” to get people “shitting their pants this much” over the incoming president before the inauguration.
“We appear transitional period where we are not sure about whether the ground we are standing on is solid,” Stewart said of the country after a “tumultuous” year.
The Daily Show host argued, however, that much of the media has already made up their minds about whether there is solid ground below everyone’s feet, referencing Looney Tunes characters to make his point.
“Although the news media seems convinced that we are the Roadrunner and the Coyote, and the Coyote has run over the cliff, and we just looked down and realized there’s nothing under our feet and now we are plunging to our deaths,” he said. “Because the news media is always very circumspect.”
Stewart added we “unfortunately can’t see into the future” and we ultimately “don’t know what’s going to happen when Donald Trump takes over.”
During the episode, Stewart compared Trump becoming president to “the kids are going to live with dad for the summer and you just have to fucking eat it,” adding he and Sanders are for a more “efficient” government and “fundamental” changes as Trump and his allies say they want, but he added it’s “strange” because he doesn’t “trust” the people that will make up this next administration.
The comedian is a vocal critic of Trump himself, but he accused media outlets of getting people “shitting their pants” far too early.
“We have to be prepared for all outcomes,” he said. “I don’t know how helpful it is to get us shitting our pants this much, this early.”
