Democratic strategist James Carville called President Joe Biden the “most tragic figure in modern American politics” following the Democrats’ election loss to President-elect Donald Trump and Biden’s pardoning of his son, Hunter Biden.

In the latest episode of Politics War Room for Politicon, Carville, along with co-host Al Hunt, assessed Trump’s various nominees and how his second administration is shaping up. Carville, at one point, put Biden in his focus, arguing the president “knows he fucked up” when it comes to the election. The strategist laid out a scenario where Biden would have announced he was not running in September 2023, saying, “Goddmamn, we would have won this election.”

Had Biden dropped his reelection hopes sooner, Carville argued, there would have been no need for a Hunter Biden pardon. The president’s son was awaiting sentencing on gun and tax charges, which the president is facing some blowback for since he previously said he would not get involved.

Carville said:

“The most tragic figure in American politics in my lifetime is President Biden. So he said, ‘I’ll never pardon the kid,’ okay, I don’t believe — when anybody says, ‘I never had sex with that person’ or ‘I won’t pardon my kid,’ I don’t pay any attention to it because I think everybody lies about sex and everybody’s going to do whatever they’re going to do with their own children. But the different scenario would be, if he would have in September of 2023 or August said that he wasn’t going to run, goddamn, we would have won this election. And it wouldn’t have been that close because we would have had so many frickin’ talented people that were running and he would be sitting her right now getting ready to leave on a high note, they would be naming commissions to figure out what are we going to name after him. He would be the toast of Washington, it would be a Democratic inauguration coming up, and a new Democratic president could have gotten away with commuting any sentence that Hunter Biden got. And it would have been minimal, minimal — there would have been some pushback, but, you know, in the interest of the Biden family and President Biden’s long and distinguished service to the community, I’m going to commute the sentence.”

The strategist added that he’s long “admired” Biden since he first entered the political arena, but he predicted a long six years before the party is able to look back and acknowledge the policy accomplishments over everything else.

Carville hasn’t solely blamed Biden for the election loss to Trump, having previously been highly critical of the way Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign was run.

“What’s so sad, it didn’t have to be this way. He brought it all on himself. I know the people around him are at his beck and call, the employees, the consultants, his wife — I understand all of that, but at the bottom of this, Joe Biden is and will continue to be the most tragic figure in modern American politics. I don’t think there’s any doubt about that,” he said.

Carville said Biden’s political wounds are “all so fucking self-inflicted.”

“I actually feel for Biden, and he knows that he fucked up,” he said. “And he wasn’t crooked, he didn’t pursue bad policies, he is the most tolerant, loving, caring, non-prejudiced person you could imagine and this is what he’s faced with. It’s a fucking shame.”
