‘Come On!’ CNN’s Jim Acosta Goes At It With GOP Analyst On Whether Trump Should ‘Apologize’ For Jan 6 Riot
CNN anchor Jim Acosta clashed with GOP analyst Brad Todd after asking if President-elect Donald Trump should apologize for the Jan. 6 riot, and Todd tried to turn the tables on Democrats.
Four years ago, Trump cheered on a mob as they hunted then-Vice President Mike Pence through the Capitol grounds chanting for him to be hanged because he refused Trump’s demand to go along with a plot to overturn the election.
But Trump’s election to a second term has helped to ensure that he will avoid legal repercussions from that event, as the Justice Department has wound down the cases against him.
On Monday’s edition of CNN Newsroom With Jim Acosta, Acosta scoffed at Todd’s response to his question about a Trump apology, while analyst Maria Cardona interrupted to call Todd’s claims false:
JIM ACOSTA: Brad, is it time for Donald Trump to apologize for what took place four years ago?
BRAD TODD: I wouldn’t expect Donald Trump would apologize, I think, nor do I expect Democrats to apologize for trying to undo his presidency by all legal and extralegal means after that.
JIM ACOSTA: Oh come on Brad! Come on!
BRAD TODD: No– dude! Look at our own polling. Look at CNN’s own exit polling. Voters who said they voted on democracy were evenly split between Democrats and Republicans.
January 6th was a dark day in the history of our country. Donald Trump bears a lot of responsibility for that. It’s something that that should stin his legacy forever.
However, voters, they punished him for it. That’s why he was behind Ron DeSantis by 20 points until Alvin Bragg indicted him.
And once voters decided that Democrats were determined to prevent Donald Trump from being elected by any extralegal means, they decided maybe this wasn’t as clear.
JIM ACOSTA: I mean, shouldn’t your party have just rejected him? Just flat out rejected him? From, from Kevin McCarthy to Mitch McConnell to the whole lot of them.
How could how could your party let him be the nominee again? Isn’t that the question?
BRAD TODD: Watch what happened. Watch what Kevin McCarthy and Mitch McConnell said in the aftermath of that. They they absolutely did condemn and Mitch McConnell was slowing down In the months afterward on the floor.
Nancy Pelosi decided to use January 6th for partisan gain, though.
MARIA CARDONA: That’s not true, Brad.
BRAD TODD: She appointed– she refused to let Kevin McCarthy appoint Republicans to the committee.
MARIA CARDONA: That’s not true either.
BRAD TODD: She didn’t let Republicans hire staff to the January 6th Oversight Committee. They didn’t allow cross-examination.
JIM ACOSTA: The Jan. 6 Committee had the Republican of all Republicans, Liz Cheney. Liz Cheney.
(crosstalk).
Booted out of your party.
BRAD TODD: I mean, she wasn’t appointed by her conference like.
JIM ACOSTA: Dick Cheney’s daughter.
BRAD TODD: She wasn’t appointed in Republican conference.
JIM ACOSTA: Good Republican.
Cardona is correct, then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was permitted to appoint Republicans — McCarthy withdrew his Jan. 6 committee members when 2 out of 7 were rejected.
