Longtime radio host Mike Francesa wasn’t particularly moved by the news that 39th President of the United States Jimmy Carter died Sunday.
Carter passed away Sunday afternoon, and his family made the announcement shortly after. The former president had just turned 100 years old in October.
Reacting to the news of Carter’s passing on Sunday’s episode of The Mike Francesa Podcast, Francesa first wondered if Carter was the only president to live to 100 before detailing his complicated legacy.
“I just see the breaking news that former President Jimmy Carter has passed away at the age of, amazingly, 100,” Francesa said. “I don’t know if he’s the first president to ever make 100. I would think he probably is, but I don’t know that. Don’t swear me to that because I don’t know if that’s true; but I think it is.
“Carter — history hasn’t been great to Jimmy Carter. He was not a great president. I’m not trying to disparage him in any way. Remember, you were coming off Watergate. The United States, the country felt that Washington was dirty, corrupt. They had had enough of career politicians and [Richard Nixon] was the ultimate career politician. I mean, he had been in Congress, he had been a two-time vice president, he ran for president ’60, he ran for governor in ’
Francesa’s on-air eulogies have become a running joke online in recent years. When reporting on a high-profile death, Francesa’s remarks are almost always void of sympathies and he often criticizes the person who just died.
When he doesn’t even known who the person is — as was the case with the late Marvel Comics publisher Stan Lee — Francesa has no problem admitting the death is completely insignificant to him.
