Jimmy Carter has passed away at the age of 100, his family announced Sunday, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution first reported.

The outlet noted:

Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, has died. Chip Carter, a son of the former president, said his father died about 3:40 p.m. on Sunday in his Plains home.

Carter served from 1977 to 1981 as president, a position that was a long way from his peanut farming upbringing in Georgia. He’d spent more than a year in hospice with his grandson Jason Carter saying in May at the Carter Center in Georgia that his grandfather’s days were “coming to the end.”

Carter’s wife, former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, passed away on November 19, 2023, at 96. The pair had been married for 77 years.

Carter only served one term but continued to be recognized throughout his life for his humanitarian and political work, including serving as one of Habitat for Humanity’s most prominent supporters, continuing to help build homes into his 90s.

He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his “decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.”

Jimmy Carter is survived by his children Jack, Chip, Jeff, and Amy, 11 grandchildren, and 14 grandchildren.
