Trump’s Creepy ‘I’m Going to Do It Whether Women Like It Or Not’ Is A Much Bigger Gaffe Than Biden’s ‘Garbage’ Remark
Just six days out from Election Day, former President Donald Trump used a curious phrase during a Wednesday night rally that, given the closeness of his race for the White House against Vice President Kamala Harris and the well-defined gender gap of supporters, is a much bigger blunder than President Joe Biden’s recent “garbage” remarks about “Trump supporters” or a “Trump supporter’s” remarks — depending on what you choose to believe.
Speaking at a rally in Green Bay, Wisconsin, festooned in a fluorescent utility vest he wore earlier in the day while answering questions from a garbage truck, Trump claimed his campaign staff has urged him not to talk about women in the manner that he has on the campaign trail:
And my people told me about four weeks ago, I was saying, “No, I want to protect the people. I want to protect the women of our country. I want to protect the women.”
“Sir, please don’t say that.”
“Why?”
They said, “We think it’s, we think it’s very inappropriate for you to say.”
I said, “Why? I’m president. I want to protect the women of our country.”
They said [APPLAUSE], they said, “Sir, I just think it’s inappropriate for you to say.”
[I] pay these guys a lot of money. Can you believe it? And I said, “Well, I’m going to do it whether the women like it or not. I’ve gotta protect them. I’m gonna protect them from migrants coming in. I’m gonna protect them from foreign countries that wanna hit us with missiles and lots of other things.”
As Mediaite’s Michael Luciano observed in his initial write-up of these comments:
Trump saying “whether the women like it or not” is a questionable choice of words, considering that last year, a civil jury found him liable for sexually assaulting writer E. Jean Carroll in the mid-1990s. Just last week, former model Stacey Williams alleged Trump groped her breasts and buttocks. In all, 27 women have accused Trump of varying degrees of sexual misconduct. The former president denies wrongdoing.”
Trump previously boasted of forcing himself on women in the infamous Access Hollywood tape.
“You know I’m automatically attracted to beautiful—I just start kissing them,” he said. “It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. Grab ’em by the pussy. You can do anything.
Trump’s comments from Wednesday night were delivered in the context of his plan to “protect women” regardless of what over half of the US population wants but given the current debate over reproductive rights following a Dobbs decision that effectively killed Roe v. Wade? The idea that Trump knows what’s best for women and will do whatever he wants regardless hangs a bright, shiny lantern on arguably the issue of which he is most vulnerable, and also, the biggest motivation for many to turn out to vote against him.
By contrast, Biden’s “garbage” comment was unquestionably self-owned. The fact that it came during Harris’s closing argument speech at the White House ellipse and completely distracted his Vice President at the most critical time of the election is the single best evidence that Biden is no longer equipped to serve as commander-in-chief, let alone run for another term.
Even though the White House immediately clarified what Biden meant, and the president even clarified his comments on social media, the Trump campaign seized on it by having Trump get into a garbage truck with his name emblazoned on it, using it as evidence to allege how the Biden-Harris sees the Trump base.
Thing is: Biden isn’t running for president, Kamala Harris is. And to her great credit, she immediately distanced herself from the president she serves in a well-handled Sister Souljah moment that deserves more praise for its unifying message and her willingness to call out Biden’s dumb remarks/misstatement.
Given the raft of coverage the garbage affair received in the past 24 hours, Trump’s boasting that he knows better than women is not quite a scandal but an open admission that deserves the same, if not more, full-throated analysis that Biden’s misstep received.
