‘These Parasites Had It Coming’: CEO Killer Suspect Arrested With Manifesto Railing Against Health Insurance Industry

Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old man arrested in connection with the assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, had a “manifesto” with him when he was taken into custody that railed against the health insurance industry, CNN reported on Monday.

Thompson was shot and killed early Wednesday morning outside of the New York Hilton Midtown, where the company was holding an investor conference. The masked suspect reportedly shot the 50-year-old CEO multiple times before fleeing, first on foot and then on an e-bike into Central Park. Police said that they believe this was a premeditated and targeted attack.

On Thursday, multiple media outlets reported that the police had tracked the suspect to a nearby hostel, where he reportedly stayed for several days prior to the shooting. Surveillance video showed him mostly wearing a mask, but there were several instances where he was in a hooded jacket and his face was exposed. The NYPD released two images on Thursday morning and a nationwide manhunt ensued.

On Monday, Mangione was reportedly identified by a McDonald’s employee in Altoona, Pennsylvania and he was taken into custody for questioning. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said in a press conference that police recovered a weapon and suppressor similar to what was used in the shooting, multiple false IDs, “clothing, including a mask consistent with those worn by our wanted individual,” and “a handwritten document that speaks to both his motivation and mindset.”

CNN chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst John Miller reported additional details about this two-page document on CNN News Central Monday afternoon, describing Mangione as “railing against the health care industry, which of course fits into the scenario here.”

“He talks about how these parasites had it coming,” Miller continued. “He starts off basically saying ‘I don’t want to cause any trauma, but it had to be done.'”

On the second page, Miller said, Mangione “really kind of goes into problems with the health industry…talking about the health care industry and the need for violence.” Miller highlighted the beginning of the document, where Mangione wrote phrases like “it had to be done” and “these parasites had it coming.”

Additional reporting about Mangione included that he is a 26-year-old engineer who grew up in Towson, Maryland, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2020, and then got a master’s degree in engineering. There were addresses associated with him in Towson where he grew up, in Philadelphia where he went to school, and most recently in Honolulu, Hawaii. Among the fake IDs, said Miller, was one that Mangione reportedly used to check into the hostel in New York City where he stayed before the shooting.

Miller also reported that in that manifesto, Mangione declared that he had acted alone and self-funded his activities.
