Pete Hegseth Ruthlessly Mocked After Mom Calls Senators to Lobby for His Nomination: ‘Alpha Male’
On Wednesday, Pete Hegseth turned to an unusual person to save his imperiled nomination as Secretary of Defense.
His mother.
Since being nominated by President-elect Donald Trump last month, Hegseth has faced accusations of serial infidelity and sexual assault. The reports have cast serious doubt on his ability to get confirmed by the Senate, which Republicans control. However, Hegseth can only afford to lose three Republican votes, assuming all 47 Democrats vote against him.
Last week, The New York Times published the contents of an email Penelope Hegseth sent her son in 2018 in which she excoriated him.
“You are an abuser of women — that is the ugly truth and I have no respect for any man that belittles, lies, cheats, sleeps around, and uses women for his own power and ego,” she wrote. “You are that man (and have been for years) and as your mother, it pains me and embarrasses me to say that, but it is the sad, sad truth,” she wrote, according to The Times.”
Penelope said she sent her son a follow email soon after to apologize for writing in “anger.”
On Wednesday, she defended her son on Fox News, where he used to work
“They were going through, Pete and his wife, were going through a difficult divorce, a very emotional time and I’m sure many of you across the country understand how difficult divorce is on a family,” she said. “There is emotion. We say things and I wrote that in haste, with deep emotion, as a parent.”
Hours later, The Hill reported that Penelope was making calls to senators on her son’s behalf.
“Pete Hegseth told RSC members his mom has been making calls to senators on his behalf, per source,” reported Mychael Schnell.
Not surprisingly, the report drew widespread mockery who noted that Republicans have cast themselves as belonging to a party of masculinity.
