U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO) claimed President Joe Biden’s stunning decision to pardon his son Hunter Biden “erodes Americans’ faith” in the justice system on Monday.

On Sunday evening, the president took the country by surprise when he announced that he had signed a pardon for his son’s conviction on gun charges. The decision came after months of Biden maintaining that he would not interfere with the judicial process. In a May 2024 tweet — that has since been given a community note as a result of the pardon — Biden flatly said, “No one is above the law.”

Elon Musk was quick to gloat about his app making the note.

Due to previous claims that he would not pardon his son, Biden has faced harsh backlash for his decision to do the opposite. In addition to prominent Republicans having a field day with the news, a long list of Biden supporters have also come out to condemn the move. The growing list includes Joe Walsh, Charlie Sykes, and Tom Nichols.

In a Monday morning tweet, Bennet agreed with their negative sentiments.

“President Biden’s decision put personal interest ahead of duty,” the senator said, “and further erodes Americans’ faith that the justice system is fair and equal for all.”
