Chris Cuomo Laughs After Accused CEO Killer’s Attorney Says It Was ‘Wrong’ His Client Didn’t Receive Bail
NewsNation host Chris Cuomo laughed on Tuesday after the attorney for accused UnitedHealthcare CEO killer Luigi Mangione claimed it was “wrong” that his client had been refused bail.
“He’s certainly behind bars, which I believe is wrong,” said attorney Thomas Dickey during an appearance on NewsNation’s Cuomo. “I feel like the judge should have set bail today.”
Cuomo laughed before interrupting, “Hold on, hold on. Counsel, make the case for why you would set bail for a man who screamed out in public that this needed to be done, and was found with the same weapon that was used, and did nothing to explain away why he had a manifesto explaining why he did it? Why would you want that man released exactly?”
“First of all, you know, Chris, you’re making a statement that that gun that they found matched the shooting in New York. I haven’t been certainly made aware that, I haven’t seen any ballistic reports,” shot back Dickey. “So if you’ve seen that already, that’s interesting, because I certainly haven’t seen that.”
Cuomo then questioned, “Let’s say it’s not the same gun. What is your argument as to why you would feel safe if he’s released with bail?”
“I am worried about the preservation of the Constitution of the United States,” answered Dickey. “I love that document and that’s why I do what I do. I stand on an island many times and that island is the Constitution, and the Constitution says, number one, that you have a presumption of innocence. Everybody, and including this young man.”
Earlier on Tuesday, Dickey quoted a scene from the classic comedy movie Airplane II while answering questions about his client during a press conference.
Mangione was charged with murder, criminal possession of a firearm, and possession of a forged document in Pennsylvania on Monday and is currently awaiting extradition to New York.
During his arrest, police reportedly discovered a weapon similar to the one used in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson last week, as well as a manifesto and several fake IDs.
Thompson was shot and killed by a masked man while walking to a conference in Manhattan.
