Charlamagne Knocks Gavin Newsmom’s Plans To ‘Trump Proof’ California: ‘Cut It Out’
The Breakfast Club host Charlamagne Tha God is unsure about California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s (D) plan to “Trump proof” his state as President-elect Donald Trump heads into his second term.
On Wednesday’s The Breakfast Club, Charlamagne expressed doubt over Newsom’s plan, arguing it could create problems for California for when the state actually needs help from the federal government. The radio show host said any state plans to distance from Trump should be based on policy and not the man himself.
“I do wonder what that means to ‘Trump-proof’ a state. Like, how do you ‘Trump-proof’ a state in America? Like, what happens when you need the president of the United States of America for something? Like, I don’t quite understand what that means,” he said.
Charlamagne added he may need to hear the plan’s details.
Newsom called for a special session of California lawmakers this week to protect state policies that could be targeted by Trump in his second term.
“The freedoms we hold dear in California are under attack—and we won’t sit idle,” the governor said in a statement. The governor told The Associated Press that his plan is an effort to “Trump proof” the state, which would include more funding for the attorney general’s office to fight back against any federal challenges.
Charlamagne said he’s open to supporting efforts that are specifically based on policy, but warned the optics of the effort getting too personal on Trump will blow back.
“Once again, make it about the policies because when you say things like ‘Trump-proof, you’re going to end up looking like a hypocrite when you need the president for something and you’re all in his face smiling and cheesing the same way President Biden was after they called him a threat to democracy and all of these other things and then he was like welcome back when it came time for the White House,” he said. “So it’s like, cut it out.”
