Tory Minister Grant Shapps Hangs Up Live On Sky News When Asked About Poll Prediction He’ll Lose His Seat
Tory Defence Minister Grant Shapps abruptly ended a phone call made to Sky News’ deputy political editor Sam Coates during a live broadcast after the journalist took the opportunity to ask him about the latest poll projection that he’d lose his seat in the upcoming general election.
The awkward moment happened as Coates was on air discussing a new YouGov poll that predicted a significant defeat for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Conservative Party in the upcoming election.
The YouGov poll suggests that Labour is poised for a landslide victory, with the Conservative Party facing near obliteration in key regions such as London, North England and Wales. Notably, the projection also indicates that several high-profile Conservative figures, including Shapps, are at risk of losing their seats.
As Coates reported the poll’s findings with co-host Sophie Ridge, he received an incoming call from Shapps.
Encouraged by Ridge to take the call, Coates answered and did not waste a moment in presenting the new figures.
“Hello, Grant Shapps,” Coates said. “You’re live on Sky News. I’m in the studio with Sophy Ridge. Have you just seen that you’re about to lose your seat, according to the Sky News/YouGov projection?”
Following a brief moment of silence, Coates updated viewers: “He just put the phone down on me. There we go.”
