Hannity Embraces Facebook Comment by Self-Described ‘Sh*tposter’ Who Claimed to Have Inside Info on Trump Trial
Fox News host Sean Hannity and his guests amplified a Facebook comment from a self-described “shitposter” who claimed to be a cousin of a juror in Donald Trump’s criminal trial.
The post was first brought to the public’s attention by Judge Juan Merchan, who presided over the former president’s trial that resulted in a conviction last week for falsifying business records. Merchan wrote to prosecutors and Trump’s attorneys to apprise them of a comment left on the New York court system’s Facebook page.
“My cousin is a juror and says Trump is getting convicted,” said the comment, which was posted the day before the guilty verdict was delivered. “Thank you folks for all your hard work!!!!”
Merchan did not weigh in on the veracity of the post, which has since been deleted from Facebook. NBC’s Katie Phang almost immediately noted that the profile of the user described the user as “a professional shit poster.”
The user subsequently addressed the controversy by stating, “Take it easy… I’m a professional shitposter.”
“Shitposting” is the act of purposely derailing conversations online with irrelevant, inflammatory, or false comments.
Hannity emphatically read the Facebook post at the top of his show and noted, “Judge Merchan did not indicate whether this post was valid or if the courts are investigating the matter, but this is by far a very– by any level a very alarming development.”
He then teased two upcoming segments on the matter.
“Let’s assume, Governor, that’s true,” Hannity said told guest and Fox News contributor Mike Huckabee in a subsequent statement. “In any court of law, that has to be cause for a mistrial.”
“Absolutely has to be,” Huckabee replied. “This whole case stunk as bad as you thought it could. Now it smells like a three-week garbage strike in August in New York City on the streets,”
“Wow, if that’s not cause for a mistrial, I don’t know what is,” Hannity said.
“Absolutely,” Fox contributor Lisa Boothe responded. “The fix was in from the beginning.”
In another segment, Hannity asked Fox News legal analyst Gregg Jarrett about the post.
“If it is true – and that’s a big if – but if it is true, it is grounds to vacate the conviction and order a new trial,” Jarrett stated. He then called for Merchan to appoint a court officer to investigate whether the post was valid.
“The message suggests this was egregious juror misconduct,” Jarrett continued. “It’s up to the judge to get to the bottom of it.”
“Why is it I don’t trust Judge Merchan at all?” Hannity said, rhetorically.
