Frank Luntz Warns Trump Win Means He’ll Likely Get Two More Supreme Court Picks: ‘About As Big An Impact As You Can Have’
Pollster Frank Luntz warned on Tuesday during NewsNation’s election coverage that former President Donald Trump winning the presidential race means he’ll likely end up picking a total of five Supreme Court Justices.
Luntz joined Chris Cuomo, Elizabeth Vargas, and Leland Vittert on Tuesday as election results were rolling in and Trump was called a victor by Decision Desk HQ in swing states like Georgia and North Carolina, leaving Vice President Kamala Harris relying on states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin to turn things around. With the Senate also leaning red, Luntz noted that Trump winning with a Senate in his favor would make a number of things easier for him, including having more influence over who ends up on the Supreme Court.
“The Supreme Court, with the Senate going red and with Trump at this point more than likely to be elected — still not a sure thing — but if he gets elected then he gets the appointment and with the Senate going Republican whomever he wants is going to end up on the Supreme Court,” Luntz said. “That is about as big of an impact as you can have this election evening because there are a couple Justices that will probably be retiring in the next year or two.”
He did not predict who he expects the retiring judges to be. Trump previously nominated Supreme Court Justices Brett Kavanaugh, Neil Gorsuch, and Amy Coney Barrett. Following their appointments, the long-standing Roe v. Wade was overturned.
Control of the Senate, Luntz added, helps Trump push his economic policies, like increased tariffs.
“If he has the Senate, it becomes easier for him to put forward his economic policies and some of it doesn’t even require a vote of Congress but if you’re looking for that, that tariff policy is more likely than not to come into play,” he said.
