Ladies and gentlemen, we bring you the man you most wanted to hear from in this cultural moment — Mel Gibson.
In remarks published by The Guardian, the 61-year-old actor spoke out about disgraced film mogul Harvey Weinstein, and the scores of sexual misconduct reports which have followed in Hollywood, Washington, and beyond.
“[T]here is a lot of light being thrown into places where there were shadows and that is kind of healthy,” Gibson said. “It’s painful, but I think pain is a precursor to change.”
A quick refresher of Gibson’s bona fides on the subject: The actor, in 2011, pleaded no contest to misdemeanor battery following a 2010 incident in which he was accused of assaulting his then-girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva, in an attack which left her with a black eye and two broken teeth. In 2010, tapes emerged of Gibson threatening Grigorieva using racist language. And in 2006, following his arrest for DUI and his Anti-Semitic tirade, Gibson made a sexist comment to a female police officer.
“Your heart goes out to the victims, of course,” Gibson said in a separate interview with Irish television network RTE. “And I’m glad that they spoke up. And I think it’s unfortunate that they have to relive the whole thing to heal themselves. And the rest of us are subjected to the problem. And I think we really need to look at it.
“But it’s not just Hollywood. You don’t have to be in Hollywood to experience that kind of harassment.”
