‘They’re Accusing Me of a Crime!’ Ann Selzer Fires Back at Critics After Her Disastrous Pre-Election Poll Underestimated Trump’s Support By 19 Points
Renowned pollster Ann Selzer is firing back at critics attacking her in the wake of her staggering miss ahead of the 2024 election.
Selzer, the longtime pollster for the Des Moines Register, came under fire for underestimating President-elect Donald Trump’s support in Iowa by 19 points in her final pre-election poll. Her poll showed Trump would lose the state by 3 points, but he went on to win it by 16.
In the wake of the poll, Trump accused Selzer of purposefully rigging the results.
“A totally Fake poll that caused great distrust and uncertainty at a very critical time,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Nov. 17. “She knew exactly what she was doing. Thank you to the GREAT PEOPLE OF IOWA for giving me such a record breaking vote, despite possible ELECTION FRAUD by Ann Selzer and the now discredited “newspaper” for which she works. An investigation is fully called for!
Appearing on Iowa PBS over the weekend, Selzer — while not going after Trump specifically — took offense to the notion she engaged in any kind of foul play.
“I am mystified about what the motivation anybody thinks I had and would act on in such a public poll,” Selzer said. “I don’t understand it. And the allegations I take very seriously. They’re saying that this was election interference, which is a crime. So, the idea that I intentionally set up to deliver this response, when I’ve never done that before, I’ve had plenty of opportunities to do it, it’s not my ethic.”
Selzer added, “To suggest without a single shred of evidence that I was in cahoots with somebody, I was being paid by somebody, it’s all just kind of…it’s hard to pay too much attention to it except that they are accusing me of a crime.”
