Trump Wishes Speaker Johnson ‘Good Luck’ and Claims He Has Almost ‘100% Support’ Ahead of House Vote
President-elect Donald Trump wished House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) “good luck” ahead of what could become yet another chaotic vote for House Republicans.
Trump claimed in a Friday Truth Social post that Johnson has nearly “100% support” going into that day’s vote, but there have already been indications that some Republicans will be opposing Johnson’s continued leadership.
“Good luck today for Speaker Mike Johnson, a fine man of great ability, who is very close to having 100% support. A win for Mike today will be a big win for the Republican Party, and yet another acknowledgment of our 129 year most consequential Presidential Election!! – A BIG AFFIRMATION, INDEED. MAGA!” Trump wrote.
Trump previously endorsed Johnson as House Speaker. Johnson needs any boost he can get as Republicans have only a one vote majority headed into the new session of Congress, leaving Johnson with a narrow window on votes.
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) is one of the lawmakers who has said he will completely oppose Johnson’s continued leadership. Johnson ran into backlash from his own party when attempting to pass a continuing resolution budget to avoid a government shutdown. A bill was eventually passed that funds the government through mid-March, but a number of Republican lawmakers called for much steeper spending cuts.
“You can pull all my fingernails out, you can shove bamboo up in them, you can start cutting off my fingers. I am not voting for Mike Johnson tomorrow, and you can take that to the bank,” Massie said.
Johnson spent part of Thursday meeting with holdout lawmakers such as Reps. Chip Roy (R-TX), Eli Crane (R-AZ), and Andy Biggs (R-AZ) on the Speaker vote.
