Chip Roy Defends Scandal-Plagued Pete Hegseth: ‘We’ve All Had Some Indiscretions’

Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) defended scandal-plagued Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee to run the Defense Department, commenting that everyone had committed “indiscretions” in their past.

Hegseth, a former Fox News host, is battling allegations he sexually assaulted a woman, has issues with alcohol, and had been an unfaithful husband. He has denied any wrongdoing and has vowed to pursue Senate confirmation to run the Pentagon.

It remains to be seen if the 44-year-old will have enough support for confirmation once Trump takes office.

On The Charlie Kirk Show on Friday, Roy claimed Hegseth was the target of a smear campaign from “squishy senators.” The Texas Republican also argued no one is perfect:

I know he’s under fire in the Senate, but he’s under fire from squishy senators who have been against everything we want to do. And so I hope he holds the line all the way through. I’m defending him and we should all defend him. You know, look, we’ve all had some indiscretions in our past and things like that. Every human has. But good grief. You know, he’s got the support of so many people and he represents somebody who would take on the defense establishment. And we need that. Desperately need that.

Hegseth was defiant on Thursday when addressing reporters about his past and his coming confirmation hearing. The U.S. Army veteran said his life was a story of “redemption.” He also said he would not be “tried” by reporters.

“I will answer all of these senators’ questions. But this will not be a process tried in the media,” he stated. “I don’t answer to anyone in this group. None of you, not to that camera at all. I answer to President Trump, who received 76 million votes on behalf and a mandate for change. I answer to the 100 senators who are part of this process and those in the committee.”
