GOP Rep. Chip Roy Rages At Republicans For Backing $1.2 Trillion Spending Bill: ‘They Are The Ones Risking The Election’

Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) denounced Republican lawmakers voting for the $1.2 trillion spending bill, claiming they are putting the GOP majority at risk in the upcoming election.

During a Freedom Caucus press conference on Friday morning shortly before the minibus was passed through the House, Roy warned that the GOP’s slim majority could fade away by November. The bill provides funding for the Departments of Homeland Security, Defense, Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and State.

Conservative lawmakers opposing the bill have complained about not being given enough time to review the 1,012-page legislation. Other Republicans have blamed Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) who filed a motion to vacate on Friday morning.

“I want to be very clear: Any Republican who votes for this bill, they own it, and they are the ones risking the election,” Roy said at the press conference.

“It’s the people that are going around saying, ‘But oh, we’ll cost the election, oh, but what happens if we have a shutdown?’ They’re the ones running in fear rather than leading,” he added.

Republican leaders supporting the bill have claimed that it cuts funding to diversity and equity programs while providing immigration enforcement services with more detention beds. However, hardline conservatives in the House claim it does not do enough to address immigration and includes too many spending priorities.

The bill passed the House on Friday with a vote of 286-134 with more than 185 Democrats and 101 Republicans supporting the spending package.
