‘Total Lack of Backbone!’ GOP Rep. Chip Roy Absolutely Nukes Speaker Johnson, Republicans Over ‘Abomination’ Spending Bill
Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) accused House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and other fellow Republicans of lacking a “backbone” over support for a spending bill that would prevent a partial government shutdown.
The $1.2 trillion dollar spending package was negotiated by leaders from both parties and the White House. It includes funding for various government institutions like the Department of Homeland Security and it needs to be passed by Friday to avoid a partial government shutdown by the weekend.
Johnson praised the bill in a statement, saying there were some “conservative policy wins,” including $20 billion in proposed cuts to the IRS.
Roy is among the Republicans that is far from a fan of the spending package. Speaking with Steve Bannon on the War Room podcast, Roy went so far to say he would not be supporting any Republican that backs the bill. The congressman argued Republicans could have and should have fought for concrete cuts in spending and border reform policies.
“It’s total lack of backbone, total lack of leadership and a total failure by Republican leadership! There’s no other way to describe it. This bill is an abomination. I don’t even have words for any Republican that votes for this bill. I promise you I will not be going out and supporting any Republican who votes for this bill for any position, ever again,” the Texas Republican said.
Roy argued Johnson should have negotiated for stricter border reforms rather than giving more money to Border Patrol. A bipartisan border bill supported by President Joe Biden previously failed to gain the support of Republicans including Johnson.
According to Roy, Johnson “blew it” with the new spending bill, refusing to use his negotiating power.
“Republican leadership refuses to use leverage to fight for those things. Look, you understand dealmaking. Former President [Donald] Trump understands dealmaking. You can’t get everything you want. None of us would say you can, but dag gummit, we should get at least something significant in the fight,” he said. “We should use our leverage, and Mike Johnson blew it when he walked away from a continuing resolution that we could have extended through this year to trigger the caps that we had put in place last year. We would force Democrats to the table and then leverage this.”
The frustrated congressman claimed he’s been told major border reforms will be included in a supplemental funding package for Ukraine, but Roy pushed back on this idea noting many Republicans are not supportive of more funding for Ukraine.
“The other thing he could have done, pass a CR today that kicks this into May, trigger Thomas Massie’s one percent provision, then you force Democrats to the table and you say, guys, we’re not going to do any of this unless we actually secure the border,” Roy said. “But now we’re getting yet another promise. Trust me, Chip, we’ll secure the border when we do a supplemental on Ukraine funding.”
