Ocasio-Cortez Blasts Trump For Funding ICE, Days After She Voted For Its Funding
In only a few days into her term as congresswoman for New York’s 14th congressional district, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) appears to be ignoring a critical campaign promise.
After winning on the platform of abolishing the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency and replacing it with something else, Ocasio-Cortez recently voted to keep ICE, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security at large, funded until February.
H.J.Res. 1: Making further continuing appropriations for the Department of Homeland Security for fiscal year 2019, and for other purposes, introduced by Rep. Nita Lowey (D-NY), was passed on January 3 to keep DHS funded without any funds going towards the border wall that is being pushed for by President Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress.
239 Democrats and 5 Republicans voted in favor of it, among them Ocasio-Cortez, with 192 Republicans voting against.
Her vote came before she blasted Trump on Tuesday after his speech to the nation.
“The president should be really defending why we are funding [ICE] at all because right now, what we are seeing, is death,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “Right now we are seeing the violations of human rights.”

“It’s time to abolish ICE, clear the path to citizenship, and protect the rights of families to remain together,” her campaign website states. “As overseen by the Trump administration, ICE operates with virtually no accountability, ripping apart families and holding our friends and neighbors indefinitely in inhumane detention centers scattered across the United States.”
