CNN’s KFile Calls Out Ted Cruz’s Democratic Opponent For Misleading Claim That He ‘Stood Up to Joe Biden on the Border’
CNN’s KFile team is calling out Colin Allred (D-TX), the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate seeking to unseat Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), over his misleading claim that he “stood up to Joe Biden on the border.”
In a new ad, Allred touts his supposed credentials as a border hawk, declaring that “fentanyl is flooding into our country, our border is broken, and so are our politics.”
He continued:
To fix it, we’ve gotta go after the cartels and fix the border. We’ve gotta do it in a way that’s going to uphold our values, values passed down from my grandfather, a customs officer in Brownsville. I stood up to Joe Biden on the border and to extremists like Ted Cruz for preferring chaos to real solutions. I’m Colin Allred. I’m running for Senate to fix this problem.
To support his claim that he has opposed Biden’s lax border policies, the ad touts an article highlighting the fact that Allred voted in favor of a resolution denouncing “the Biden administration’s open-borders policies” earlier this year, which Cruz characterized as being part of a “cowardly flip-flopping strategy” at the time.
The KFile team’s findings lend some credence to that criticism.
As his home state grappled with a historic influx of migrants showing up at the border in 2022. Allred said that concerns about the border were part of “the right-wing echo chamber.”
“I don’t hear a lot about the border here in Dallas, and I’m in a border state. Obviously, we want to have comprehensive immigration reform. We want to try and, you know, address some of these things,” Allred told CBS News’ Major Garrett at the time. “But it’s not – I don’t think it’s a top-of-mind issue.”
Allred has also previously derided the idea of building a border wall as “racist.”
“If they build that wall, I will be there tearing it down,” he declared in 2018.
