Democratic NYC Mayor Eric Adams Hints He Might Switch Parties Over Immigration Issue

Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams spent two radio interviews Friday dancing around the issue of whether he might switch party affiliation due to a budding friendship with President-elect Donald Trump and disagreements on matters like immigration.

When asked during an appearance on NY1 whether he would consider joining the GOP, Adams said only, “I’m a part of the American party. I love this country.”

Adams next appeared on PIX11, where he answered, “No matter what party I’m on or vote on, I’m going to push for American values.”

This wouldn’t be the first time Adams has switched parties; Politico reported that Adams “was a member of the GOP from 1995 through 2002.”

Adams has been highly critical of Democratic policies on the U.S. border with Mexico, and has said the issue “will destroy New York City” if left unchecked. The mayor has vowed to work with the incoming Trump administration on his city’s influx of immigrants, which hasn’t sat well with some Democrats.

Adams is set to meet with border czar nominee Tom Homan next week on the administration’s deportation plans. “Adams has said he would support any federal plan that focuses on those undocumented immigrants who have committed serious crimes,” Politico reported.

Critics accuse Adams cozying up to Trump, and some think he’s jockeying for a presidential pardon if convicted on federal charges of bribery and campaign finance offenses.

On ABC’s The View last month, Adams was asked if a pardon was on the table.

“My job is to do what I’ve done since January 1st, 2022,” Adams said. “Make sure crime goes down in the city, record number of housing built through the city, turn around our economy and make sure as you leave this place that you could enjoy the safety of the city.”
