CNN Panel Fumes at Scott Jennings for Calling X ‘Most Ideologically Balanced’ Platform — He Responds By Citing CNN’s Own Report as His Source

Scott Jennings left a CNN panel fuming after he called X the “most ideologically balanced” social media platform, citing the network’s own report after he was accused of pushing misinformation.

On Monday’s NewsNight, things got heated at the table as Jennings pushed back against called for more “regulating” of speech on Elon Musk’s X, a platform most of the panelists argued is concerning considering Musk’s close relationship to President-elect Donald Trump and his work with the incoming administration.

“No one’s regulating the n-word, no one’s regulating the criticism, no one is regulating how people are treated,” Cari Champion said.

“How much regulation of the First Amendment are you for?” Jennings asked.

“Let me tell you something, if I came on here and I just started calling you all kinds of names, do you think the bosses would continue to let me do that?” Campion shot back.

“I mean, it happens to me occasionally, I don’t know if you’ve watched,” Jennings responded.

“But it doesn’t happen for me and I know that I wouldn’t be able to do that. There’s a level of professionalism in what we do here because we are journalists and we adhere to something, at least morally, and there is no moral compass on this thing called X,” Campion said.

In another heated exchange, Jennings referred to X as the “most ideologically balanced” social media platform, confusing Campion and guest anchor Audie Cornish.

Check out the exchange below.

AUDIE CORNISH: “Now, Scott, I want to bring you in here because this kind of linked to [Victor] Orban, we don’t pull it from nowhere, there was a former member of the Hungarian Parliament who was writing in Politico, who kind of talked about this effort by that government and how specific it was in terms of purchasing media specifically for propaganda. Do you hear why they’re making that connection?”

SCOTT JENNINGS: “I mean, is the concern that certain media outlets would become propaganda arms of political ideologies? Don’t we already have that in this country at a large scale? Also I hear what you’re saying about X, I saw a survey this week, it’s now the most ideologically balanced user platform.”

CARI CHAMPION: “Scott, Scott, stop, it’s too early. I just sat down. I’ve only been here for two minutes, you cannot say that. Who’s the source?!”

JENNINGS: “We’ve reported on this network.”

CHAMPION: “It’s not accurate and you know it.”

JENNINGS: “Okay. I’ll let you make your statement, but my point is —”

CORNISH: “Let me frame it a different way. The site changed radically, right? So whether you think the voices are somehow more balanced now, that’s fine. But no doubt Musk’s influence is profound and that you open it up and now you’re there with his opinion and he is now part of this administration.”

Jennings was referring to a report by CNN data journalist Harry Enten in which he showed that regular X users are basically evenly split between Democrats and Republicans.

“Look at where we are today. Just a completely different picture now. It’s basically split between Democrats at 48%, Republicans at 47%. And what I should note, Mr. Berman, is this. now, this new overall makeup matches the overall electorate far better and more than that,” he reported.
