The Guardian Slams ‘Toxic’ X and Pro-Trump Owner Elon Musk in Decision to Stop Using Platform
The Guardian announced Wednesday it will no longer post from its official editorial accounts on X, blasting the website as a “toxic media platform” that promotes “far-right conspiracy theories and racism.”
In an editorial the UK-based publication’s criticism extended to owner Elon Musk, as the outlet alluded to his influence on political discourse via X, framing his leadership as fostering an environment where misinformation thrives.
“The US presidential election campaign served only to underline what we have considered for a long time,” the statement read.
The editorial continued to announce that the publication no longer considered X a suitable outlet for its journalism.
“We think that the benefits of being on X are now outweighed by the negatives,” the Guardian explained, adding that “resources could be better used promoting our journalism elsewhere.”
Musk has reshaped the platform since taking ownership, and it has been under fire for alleged bias and misuse of influence.
While The Guardian’s editorial accounts will go silent, X users will still be able to share Guardian articles on the platform. Additionally, the publication noted that live news updates on its website will occasionally embed X content when necessary.
The outlet encouraged audiences to access news directly from their website, emphasizing a reader-funded model free from “viral content tailored to the whims of the social media giants’ algorithms.”
