Michael Kay Goes OFF on JJ Redick for Dropping F-Bomb at Lakers Presser: ‘The Coarsening of Our Society’
Longtime Yankees announcer Michael Kay used JJ Redick’s comments at his first Lakers press conference to rant about societal ills.
Redick on Monday was introduced as the Lakers’ 29th head coach in franchise history. During the presser, he was asked if he was eager to prove his critics wrong as a first-time head coach. In response, Redick bluntly admitted that he didn’t “give a fuck.”
On Tuesday’s episode of The Michael Kay Show, Kay was astounded by both the comments and the supposed lack of backlash for it.
“What exactly has happened to the coarsening of our society,” Kay said, “where a guy who went to Duke — a bright guy — just drops an F-bomb? Why? On live TV! Is that OK now? Is that OK? So maybe the FCC should change all these rules, too.
“And it’s not just JJ Redick, but this is a man of authority right now. People use the F-word like it’s nothing now!”
While Kay acknowledged that there are “different levels of media” — like podcasts — he maintained that Redick should have had more of a filter during the live TV broadcast.
“Again, I don’t wanna be that old man,” Kay said, “but I would ask JJ Redick, ‘Do you care that there might’ve been a 10 or a 12-year-old listening to that? Because I don’t want my kids to talk like that. I think a lot of society, they don’t care anymore!”
