Mike Greenberg Announces the Death of NBA Legend Jerry West on ESPN: ‘One of the Greatest Figures in the History of American Sports’
ESPN’s Mike Greenberg broke the news of the death of NBA legend Jerry West on Wednesday in the middle of the show Get Up.
Minutes before Get Up returned from a commercial break, the Los Angeles Clippers announced West passed Wednesday morning at 86. He most recently served as an executive for the team.
West, the team added, passed peacefully with his wife Karen by his side.

Greenberg called West “one of the greatest figures in the history of American sports.”
“We have incredibly important news, and I am sorry to be the one to tell you,” he said on Get Up, “but one of the greatest figures in the history of American sports, one of the greatest players, and one of the most important people in the history of basketball — in this or any country — has died. Jerry West has died at the age of 86.
“Where do you begin to describe a person’s career? It has been argued, and I will argue it loudly, that there aren’t a handful of people who had more significant careers in basketball than Jerry West did.”
