Joe Rogan revealed he’d warned his friend Tony Hinchcliffe about his controversial Puerto Rico joke before he took stage at former President Donald Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally.

Hinchcliffe set off a wave of controversy after taking the stage and jokingly referring to Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage.” On The Joe Rogan Experience, Rogan blasted critics for taking a joke as a statement but also warned comedians against doing exactly what Hinchliffe did.

“I tell all comedians, don’t ever do comedy at something that’s not a comedy event. Don’t do it. Don’t ever do comedy at a place that’s doing ‘also.’ Is he going to have a bunch of speakers and you’re going to do 10 minutes? Don’t ever do that. It’s a terrible setup,” he said.

Hincliffe’s podcast Kill Tony is often filmed at Rogan’s Comedy Mothership in Austin, Texas. Rogan explained that Hinchliffe’s joke awkwardly enough comes from Hinchcliffe reading about Puerto Rico’s real landfill issues. Rogan still wanred his friend once upon a time the joke could get him “stabbed.”

“That joke kills at comedy clubs. I don’t like the joke, but it kills, and I said to him, it’s just like, if you’re Puerto Rican and you hear that in the audience, you’re like, ahhh, but it’s a funny joke, the joke does well. But I said to him, I go, dude, that’s the one that’s going to get you stabbed,” he said.

Rogan called his friend the “best roaster ever” and predicted the fallout from the joke will “blow over.”

“I think it’ll blow over just like all these things do. There are people that are always going to hate someone like Tony and it’s going to make other people love him more,” he said. “It’s just, like, he’s going through it right now. He’s going through the storm.”
