Joe Rogan and his guest pondered a reality where former President Donald Trump became more “civil” after the assassination attempt against him, though the journey only ended with the pair laughing off the possibility.

Former CIA officer Mike Baker joined Rogan on the latest episode of The Joe Rogan Experience and as the two were catching up on big news stories that had happened since they last spoke, Baker laid out what he argued would have been the best strategy for Trump following the former president being shot last month during a Pennsylvania rally.

Baker, now a technical advisor and commentator, argued Democrats would have “gone crazy” if Trump made an effort to tone down his rhetoric and take a more “reflective” approach to politics, citing the shooting as his reason for such a drastic shift.

Baker argued:

If after that attempt had happened and he had just walked that civil line and said, you know, I’ve had a reflective moment and if he had kept the high road, think about the disparity there because the Democrats, they would have — first of all, they would have gone crazy because they wouldn’t know what to do, but they also wouldn’t have been able to help themselves so they would have thrown the hand grenades again as usual. And then you would have had Trump over here being the reasonable one and being the reflective and civil one.

“That would have been a good strategy,” Rogan agreed.

“But it didn’t happen,” Baker said, laughing.

“No, it’s not in his nature. That’s the scorpion and the frog,” Rogan said, joining in the laughter.

The scorpion and the frog is a fable that centers on a scorpion trying to get across a river. After a frog agrees to take him and begins swimming across the river, the scorpion stings the frog, dooming both animals. When the frog asks why the scorpion did it, the predator responds by saying it’s simply his nature.

“It’s the same thing,” Rogan said about Trump.

Rogan, who has argued Vice President Kamala Harris has real potential in beating Trump in November, argued the reason for Trump remaining Trump is simple: he like’s “talking shit” and he’s “good” at it.

“That guy loves to talk shit. I mean, he’s calling Tim Walz Tampon Tim now,” Rogan said, breaking out into more laughter. “He’s so good at it! It’s such a good nickname!”
