David Axelrod Wonders If Trump Will Stop Airing ‘Personal Grievances’ and Attacking Opponents: ‘Let’s See If He Does That’
Democratic strategist David Axelrod said it “would behoove” President-elect Donald Trump to stop grinding personal and political axes, and instead focus on the job ahead of him, adding, “Let’s see if he does that.”
On Monday, Congress certified Trump as the winner of the 2024 election in what was a mere formality, as opposed to the last time when a pro-Trump mob stormed the Capitol in 2021 to try to overturn the election result. During that time, Trump, who tried to pressure officials in states he lost into subverting their results, watched the riot on television and did not send help for hours.
Hours after certification on Monday, Axelrod appeared on CNN’s AC360, where Anderson Cooper asked about what relationship Trump and congressional Democrats – who are in the minority in both chambers – will look like.
“How do you see the first hundred days going in terms of what Democrats do, how Trump interacts with them?” the host asked.
“Donald Trump has said he’s gonna lower people’s prices very quickly,” Axelrod replied. “He said he’s gonna take care of the border, he’s gonna reduce crime, he’s gonna end war, he’s gonna do a lot of things. If he does all those things, God bless him.”
Axelrod went on to say while the two parties may be able to cooperate, Trump has not shown a willingness to work with Democrats:
And if there are places where Democrats and Republicans can cooperate, that is positive. The fact is, he has not evidenced – in the past – a particular desire to want to work with Democrats. If you read his social media feeds, that’s pretty clear even to this day.
It would behoove him, just as it does Democrats, to say, “I’ve got have bigger things to do than air my grievances and go after my enemies. I want to work with people where I can.” And let’s see if he does that.
