Mika Brzezinski Moved to Tears by Texas Woman’s Tragic Death After Denied Miscarriage Intervention
Morning Joe host Mika Brzezinski choked up as she recounted the story of a Texas woman who tragically died after being denied care during her miscarriage after the medical team claimed they couldn’t act until the fetal heartbeat stopped.
On Thursday, an article published by ProPublica detailed how Josseli Barnica, a 28-year-old woman who was 17 weeks pregnant, died in 2021 after a hospital delayed her miscarriage treatment, fearing legal repercussions under Texas’s abortion laws.
Although her miscarriage was progressing, doctors reportedly refused to intervene until the fetal heartbeat ceased, citing legal concerns. For 40 hours, Barnica remained exposed to infection risks, which eventually led to her death from sepsis.
Brzezinski raised the story while pushing back on former President Donald Trump’s promise at a Wisconsin rally Wednesday night that he would “protect women” whether they “like it or not.”
The host argued that after the rollback of federal abortion protections under Roe v Wade under Trump, state restrictions have created ambiguity for doctors fearful of prosecution. Medical experts agree that Barnica’s death was preventable and criticize the law for endangering lives by restricting timely medical intervention.
After disputing Trump’s promise by running back a supercut of his previous comments about women, including the notorious Access Hollywood tape, Brzezinski was moved to tears as she told Barnica’s story.
“This woman here, she was so excited to be having another baby. She is now one of two Texas women on record who died after doctors delayed her emergency care,” the host said.
She continued: “The baby was completely unviable. It was a miscarriage. They needed to save her. And if you take the measures and do the health care that helps empty the uterus, that then prevents her from getting an infection and dying.”
Brzezinski detailed how Barnica’s husband rushed to her bedside before growing emotional and having to stop to rally and continue.
Pivoting to the Republican nominee, Brzezinski said: “Donald Trump is the protector of women? Because his bans just killed another woman. She suffered for 40 hours in agony while her uterus remained exposed to bacteria, and three days later, this young mother, who was so excited about bringing another life into this world, was dead. That is just yet another story, and there will be many, many, many more, of life in America, Trump’s life in America for women.”
Growing angry, she concluded: “So when you look at him as the protector, just keep that in mind. I’m not sure what he is talking about. It’s kind of some sick, distorted, fascist way.”
