Elizabeth Warren Cleans Up Her Comments Calling CEO Killing ‘A Warning’ After Blowback
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) attempted to clean up her previously calling the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson a “warning” that “people can only be pushed so far.”
Warren received blowback from critics for her original comments, which she made to both The Huffington Post and to MSNBC’s Joy Reid this week.
“Violence is never the answer, but people can be pushed only so far,” the senator told The Post. “This is a warning that if you push people hard enough, they lose faith in the ability of their government to make change, lose faith in the ability of the people who are providing the health care to make change, and start to take matters into their own hands in ways that will ultimately be a threat to everyone.”
Warren made the same “people can only be pushed so far” comment to Reid on Tuesday.
In followup comments to The Post on Wednesday, Warren walked back her comments, admitting she should have been much clearer.
“Violence is never the answer. Period,” Warren said. “I should have been much clearer that there is never a justification for murder.”
Luigi Mangione, 26, has been charged with the murder of Thompson. The crime and Mangione’s alleged involvement have sparked intense debate about the health insurance industry and some have even taken to rallying to the alleged killer’s side.
“The visceral response from people across this country who feel cheated, ripped off, and threatened by the vile practices of their insurance companies should be a warning to everyone in the health care system,” Warren originally told The Post.
