Hunter Biden Special Counsel Shreds President’s Suggestion His Son’s Prosecution Was ‘Vindictive or Selective’
The special counsel appointed to look into tax and gun charges against Hunter Biden forcefully dismissed President Joe Biden’s assertion that Hunter was unfairly and selectively prosecuted.
President Biden officially pardoned his son on Sunday, writing in a Monday court filing, “No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s cases can reach any other conclusion than Hunter was singled out only because he is my son–and that is wrong.”
David Weiss, who was appointed special counsel by Attorney General Merrick Garland in August 2023, wrote in a court filing Monday, “There was none and never has been any evidence of vindictive or selective prosecution in this case.”
Paula Reid explained the filing on CNN News Central, saying that Weiss was “sort of firing back at some of the president’s statements about the nature of the case here. Weiss is trying to defend his work.” Reid continued:
He says that, quote, “In announcing this pardon yesterday, president Biden said his son was selectively and unfairly prosecuted. But Weiss said there was, quote, “None and never has been any evidence of vindictive or selective prosecution in this case.” They also accurately point out that two judges previously rejected Hunter’s claim that he was selectively prosecuted. This is significant because it’s Weiss’s first statement since these pardons were announced. Not surprising that he is trying to defend his case and the work of his team.
Also in the filing, prosecutors urged the federal judge in the California tax case not to dismiss Hunter’s indictment. Instead, they urged the judge to close the docket and allow the record to continue to exist.
Prosecutor Leo Wise, part of Weiss’s team, wrote, “The government does not challenge that the defendant has been the recipient of an act of mercy. But that does not mean the grand jury’s decision to charge him, based on a finding of probable cause, should be wiped away as if it never occurred. It also does not mean that his charges should be wiped away because the defendant falsely claimed that the charges were the result of some improper motive.”
President Biden issued his son a blanket pardon on Sunday, a decision that has received vehement pushback from both Republicans and Democrats.
