CNN Anchor Calls Trump’s ‘Whether They Like It Or Not’ Rant About Women An ‘Odd Threat’
CNN anchor Sara Sidner said former President Donald Trump’s new rant about women sounds like “an odd threat.”
Trump has drawn attention for his now-regular proclamations he will be a “protector” for women — much of it negative. At a rally in Green Bay, Wisconsin Wednesday night, Trump referenced those reactions in a rant that included ignoring consent:
And my people told me about four weeks ago, I was saying, “No, I want to protect the people. I want to protect the women of our country. I want to protect the women.”
“Sir, please don’t say that.”
“Why?”
They said, “We think it’s, we think it’s very inappropriate for you to say.”
I said, “Why? I’m president. I want to protect the women of our country.”
They said [APPLAUSE], they said, “Sir, I just think it’s inappropriate for you to say.”
[I] pay these guys a lot of money. Can you believe it? And I said, “Well, I’m going to do it whether the women like it or not.
On Thursday’s edition of CNN News Central, Sidner played that clip, and told her guest it sounded like “an odd threat,” asking what the message was:
SARA SIDNER: “Whether the women like it or not.”.
Doesn’t that sound like an odd threat? What’s the message to women here, Tricia?
TRICIA MCLAUGHLIN: I’m certainly less concerned about how Donald Trump said it versus I am concerned that Donald Trump said that he would protect women’s health care and women’s reproductive health care. That’s incredibly important to me.
The fact that him and J.D. Vance back IVF, the fact that he said he would not sign a national abortion ban. This is a real area of not only a political vulnerability for Republicans, but I think a governance vulnerability for Republicans.
We’ve seen, you know, major issues and in different states where laws have not been carried out the way that they should be. And the result is that women were hurt or put and very bad medical circumstances. So I’m really glad that Donald Trump stepped up and said that. And I’m looking forward to hearing more specifics.
