CNN’s Sara Sidner Walks Off Set After Rollicking Discussion About Airport Goodbyes Goes TMI

A CNN segment about New Zealand’s new limits on airport goodbye hugs went a little sideways when one anchor peaced out early and walked off the set.

The very last segment of Tuesday’s CNN News Central with anchors John Berman, Kate Bolduan, and Sara Sidner covered the three-minute limit on hugs that was being imposed at New Zealand airports. The story led to a few minutes of banter between the anchors that included a disagreement on the time limit, the extent of the affection shown during an airport goodbye, who is on the receiving end of the affection, and whether or not John Berman is loved or not (that was a joke). By the end of it — and probably because they were getting the wrap signal — Sidner decided she was done:

Bolduan: The airport CEO says those long goodbyes were causing serious traffic jams, adding that three minutes should be “plenty of time to say goodbye.” Well, I don’t know. I don’t know.

Berman: I have two thoughts on this.

Sidner: One?

Bolduan: Oh, goodness.

Berman: Sorry. Number One — who gets rides by family to the airport anymore? I mean, are you hugging your Uber driver for three minutes?

Bolduan: People who are loved. Okay, Two?

Berman: The second thing is, it’s just a ban on hugs. What if you raise the stakes? What if you neck? What if you, like, French kiss? Is there no limit on time there.

Bolduan: If I’m being dropped at the airport, I am definitely going for longer than a three-minute goodbye, okay?

Sidner: Wow. Well, you know what I do? I do this — [gives peace sign] Bye! [leaves the set]

Bolduan: That is not true! For the record, that is the exact opposite. You are one of the best — no, you are one of the best huggers on the planet. There’s no way you’re doing “Peace, bye.”

Sidner: Do you see me not coming back?

Bolduan: She actually is leaving.

Berman: She’s gone for real. Thank you so much for joining us–

Bolduan: She’s left early.

Berman: Yes, this has been CNN News Central—

Bolduan: Come back!

Berman: Sara’s gone. Newsroom up next.
