DNC Chair Hopeful Marianne Williamson Calls Dem Party ‘Tarnished Brand’: ‘Republicans Have Stolen Patriotism!’
Democratic National Committee chair hopeful Marianne Williamson slammed the Democratic Party as a “tarnished brand” while accusing Republicans of stealing “patriotism.”
Williamson appeared on ABC News on Thursday after announcing her longshot bid to lead the DNC. In her announcement, the self-help author argued Democrats need to “recognize the psychological and emotional dimensions” of President-elect Donald Trump’s “appeal.”
On Thursday, Williamson argued that most Democrats are aware their party is a “tarnished brand” in the wake of Vice President Kamala Harris’s loss to Trump.
“People are not stupid. Democrats understand that the Democratic Party is a tarnished brand [and] that the way things have been going didn’t work. And so it’s time to open this thing up,” she said. “The suppression of any voices other than the establishment chosen in turn in, you know, internal inside the club, people who are going to do everything the same way, the way they do it no matter what. If you want to continue the trajectory of decline, then you continue with that.”
According to Williamson, some suggest she become a Republican amid Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Tulsi Gabbard’s embrace of MAGA, but she argued that she has a true “Democratic soul” and the party has been “hijacked.”
Williamson argued:
I’m not a Republican. I don’t have a Republican soul. I have a Democratic soul so when people like to say about someone like myself, she’s trying to hijack the party, No, no, no, no, they hijacked the party. My principles and my political beliefs go back to Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt. They’re the witness and the DuPonts and the Morgans who took it over with this corporatist mentality where it’s more about the donors in too many cases than it is about the suffering of the American people. And so I want to reclaim the Democratic Party for what I believe are the traditional values of the Democratic Party.
Williamson said her longshot candidacy will include a “listening tour” across America as she accused Republicans of stealing “patriotism” and disconnecting voters from the Democratic Party.
“What are you not receiving from the party? What do you need that you’re not getting?” she said. “And I would also ask people who have traditionally voted Democratic and voted for Trump this time, how do we lose you and what do we need to do to get you back? I will also tell the great story of the United States. It kills me how Republicans have stolen patriotism, have stolen American history.”
