‘I Have No Idea’: CNN Data Guru Harry Enten Surrenders to Election Fatigue, Concludes Race Is a Toss-Up

CNN data guru Harry Enten surrendered Friday that he has no idea who will walk away from next Tuesday’s election as the president-elect and wished his network’s viewers a “great weekend.”

Enten joined CNN News Central Friday after spending the year crunching numbers to offer some insights into who will become the country’s 47th commander-in-chief – former President Donald Trump or Vice President Kamala Harris.

Network anchor Boris Sanchez noted Enten still had data that suggested there was a reason for “optimism” for both Trump and Harris.

Enten broke down scenarios in which he could see either candidate winning, but he offered a simple disclaimer. He presented a handwritten note on a yellow pad that read: “I DON’T KNOW WHO WILL WIN.”

“What I can tell you is that I don’t know who will win,” Enten explained to Sanchez and CNN’s Brianna Keilar. “And we can look at good signs for both Trump and Harris.”

As he has done all year, Enten laid out paths to 270 electoral votes for both candidates. Trump has the benefit of a majority of Americans holding a belief the country is on the wrong track while Harris could cash in on Trump’s net unfavorability, he said.

Enten added:

Now you go back through history and you say, okay, which candidate has won since 1956? Sixteen times the more popular candidate has won – the one with the higher favorable ratings, like Kamala Harris has. Just one time, the less popular candidate has won. Now I will note that one time was Donald Trump back in 2016. But keep in mind, Hillary Clinton was so unpopular. Far more unpopular than Kamala Harris right now. So you look at the net favorable ratings, and they suggest that in fact, Kamala Harris is the most likely candidate to win.

Enten then explained a scenario in which he could see Trump winning in an Electoral College wipeout.

“So the bottom line is, I have no idea who is going to win, but the only thing I do know, guys, is this,” he explained.

Enten flipped his yellow pad to another handwritten note that read: “HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!”
