Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) pulled no punches on Monday in roasting David McCormick, the GOP senate nominee in the state this cycle, as out of touch with the state and its beloved football teams: the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Philadelphia Eagles.

McCormick posted photos of himself tailgating on Sunday and wrote, “Fun tailgate in Philly today. Excited to watch the Steelers throttle the Raiders!” The tweet quickly went viral in all the wrong ways as critics pounced with comments like, “Ah yes, the Philadelphia Steelers.”

Philadelphia’s self-described “irreverent sports blog” Crossing Broad even went so far as to kindly offer the campaign intern behind the post a tip for how to do better next time. “Fun tailgate in Philly today! Eagles/Browns at 1 p.m., then excited to watch the Steelers throttle the Raiders at 4!” wrote Kevin Kinkead.

Fetterman, who is known for his spicy social media presence, also got in on the action and shared the post with a gif of Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA), McCormick’s opponent, giving it up the thumbs up and the caption “Steelers…..in Philly…………..”

During the Harris-Walz rally in Erie on Monday night, Fetterman also took a swipe at McCormick and his longtime residency in Connecticut.

“Harris-Walz is the team that’s going to lead our nation. You showed up for that in 2012 and I am a senator now. Yeah. You sent that weirdo back to New Jersey and you all going to show up for Bob Casey, and you’re going to send that weirdo back to Connecticut?” Fetterman said during the rally, comparing McCormick to Dr. Oz – who lost his bid against Fetterman in 2022 and was widely panned for his longtime residence in New Jersey.

McCormick, a former hedge fund CEO, is locked in a tight battle with Casey, in what is quickly becoming one of the most expensive U.S. Senate races in the country’s history.
