Trump Adviser Won’t Commit To Harris Debate But Assures MSNBC ‘We Are Going To Debate The Democratic Nominee’
Trump campaign senior advisor Jason Miller said Sunday he is not sure if Democrats will nominate Vice President Kamala Harris next month but vowed his boss would debate the Democratic Party’s eventual choice before the election.
Miller joined MSNBC’s election coverage to discuss claims from Harris and her allies that former President Donald Trump is afraid to face her on a debate stage.
Trump faced off against President Joe Biden last month in Georgia and was slated to face him again in September. Biden exited the race seven days ago and Harris quickly became her party’s presumptive nominee.
When Trump refrained from facing her instead of Biden for the scheduled ABC News debate, she accused him of “backpedaling.”
“I have agreed to the previously agreed upon September 10th debate, he agreed to that previously,” Harris said on Thursday. “Now it appears he’s backpedaling. But I’m ready. And I think that the voters deserve to see the split screen that exists in this race on a debate stage and so, I’m ready. Let’s go.”
Miller told MSNBC’s Chris Jansing Sunday that the Trump campaign is not convinced Harris will be the eventual nominee.
“You have said in the past that Donald Trump would debate,” Jansing said. “Is that still good?”
Miller replied, “Absolutely. We think the Democrats need to pick who their ultimate nominee is going to be.”
Jansing said that Trump debated Biden before he had formally accepted the GOP’s nomination and had agreed to the September debate. Miller responded:
Hold on, we need to make sure the Democrats actually go through and lock in Kamala Harris. It was only a month ago, Chris, that many Democrats who wanted to throw Joe Biden overboard were saying, we need to go to this mini primary. We need to go with somebody else other than Kamal Harris. It’s only been this past week that they’ve had an effort to rally around Kamala Harris. The exact same people that were saying Joe Biden was okay are the same people saying now we have to get behind Harris.
Jansing later asked Miller, “Will Donald Trump debate Kamala Harris?”
Miller concluded, “Of course, we are going to debate the Democratic nominee.”
