Colorado Secretary of State Declares on MSNBC It’s ‘Up To Voters to Save Democracy’ After SCOTUS Sides with Trump
Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold (D) declared multiple times on MSNBC that democracy is at stake in November following the Supreme Court unanimously overturning her state’s Supreme Court barring Donald Trump from the Colorado ballot.
Activists argued that under a Fourteenth Amendment clause barring people who have participated in a rebellion or insurrection from holding public office applied to Trump over his role in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
Griswold joined MSNBC’s Katy Tur following the Supreme Court weighing in on the question. Tur herself dumped out of Trump’s response to the ruling, which he celebrated by discussing his many criminal charges and arguing he has broad immunity.
“My larger reaction is disappointment. I do believe that states under our Constitution should be able to bar oath-breaking insurrectionists,” Griswold said.
Trump has not been convicted of insurrection. He is being charged over Jan. 6, but denied any wrongdoing and called his indictments political witch hunts.
Griswold said it’s “as clear as day” that Trump “incited” a mob to overturn an election.
The secretary of state added she wishes the Supreme Court made a ruling earlier and she pushed for Congress to weigh in with legislation that would expand the rights of states in deciding which candidates can make ballots.
“Ultimately, this decision leaves open the door for Congress to act to pass authorizing legislation, but we know that Congress is nearly non-functioning body,” she said. “so ultimately it will be up to the American voters to save our democracy in November.”
