Jimmy Carter’s Death Brings Rare Moment of Unity to Congress: He ‘Touched the Lives of Countless Individuals’

Former President Jimmy Carter was honored by members of Congress from both parties on Sunday afternoon after he died at the age of 100.

Carter passed away in Georgia after spending nearly two years in hospice and 13 months after his wife, former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, at 96.

The Carters were married for 77 years. Immediately upon hearing the news of his passing, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle shared messages honoring the country’s 39th president as a humanitarian who truly cared for everyone he came into contact with.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution first broke the news of Carter’s death, noting:

His son, Chip Carter confirmed that the former president died at his home in Plains about 3:45 p.m.

Carter, who lived longer than any other U.S. president, entered home hospice care in Plains, Georgia in February 2023 after a series of short hospital stays.

The only Georgian ever elected to the White House, Carter left office after a single term that was highlighted by forging peace between Israel and Egypt, but was overshadowed by the Iran hostage crisis. In the decades after, his reputation grew through his and wife Rosalynn Carter’s work at the Carter Center in Atlanta and his philanthropic causes such as Habitat for Humanity.
